Deciphering the mechanisms why cancer cells become resistant to chemotherapy is the main theme of Victor Ling's work. He discovered and analyzed a membrane protein (P-Glycoprotein) that pumps a variety of anticancer drugs out of malignant cells before these drugs have a chance to act. Based on V. Ling's studies, clinical trials are underway which use immune suppressive drugs that clog the membrane pumps allowing previously resistant cells to become sensitive again.
